Imagine an Africa where universal connectivity ensures that every community has affordable access to high-speed broadband. Where education systems embed digital literacy from an early age and upskilling programmes in coding, Artificial Intelligence (AI), data science, and cybersecurity prepare a workforce ready for the future. Imagine thriving digital economies powered by e-commerce, fintech, and mobile banking, alongside tech-enabled agriculture, healthcare, and manufacturing that boost productivity and competitiveness. An Africa, that creates and exports world-class innovations in AI, blockchain, renewable energy, and biotechnology, and finally an Africa, whose smart cities and digital public services enhance governance and quality of life. It is an Africa that is connected, collaborative, and dedicated to building a digital future that works for all.
This vision is within reach, but will not be achieved by isolated efforts. It demands a truly collaborative effort, built on harmonized policies, cross-border innovation and shared infrastructure; all of which thrive in a collaborative environment.
The Innovation Agencies in Africa (IAA) Network was established to strengthen and connect Africa’s innovation agencies, enabling them to jointly tackle challenges, share resources, and scale solutions across borders. Our focus on green innovation, digital transformation, and inclusivity reflects three powerful drivers of meaningful and lasting social impact in Africa. A mapping study of African innovation systems conducted by the University of Johannesburg’s Trilateral Research Chair in Transformative Innovation (UJ-TRCTI) 2023-2024 revealed a critical gap: limited structured collaboration within and between countries, leading to duplicated efforts and poor sharing of knowledge and resources. The IAA Network is addressing precisely this; by making collaboration not just a value we talk about, but a practice embedded in everything we do.
Within the Network, collaboration is woven in the way we operate; regular coordination meetings keep members aligned, while decision-making is guided by a Steering Committee made up of heads of member innovation agencies. Major initiatives and programs go through validation workshops, where members co-develop documents, test ideas, and refine strategies together. These are the collaborative structures that transform dialogue into tangible results.
Achieving Africa’s digital future requires an innovation ecosystem built on strong collaborative structures that align efforts, pool resources, and scale innovations across borders. While collaboration within the IAA Network is primarily among innovation agencies, each agency is itself a hub, connected to a wide range of stakeholders in its national ecosystem—startups, policymakers, academia, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, industry and development partners. Through their participation in the IAA Network, these national actors are, in turn, linked to peers and opportunities across the continent, creating a powerful web of connections. These interconnected structures form a truly connected African innovation ecosystem, capable of expanding connectivity, closing the technology gap, and ensuring digital transformation is inclusive, benefiting all marginalized groups.
In practice, the IAA Network’s collaborative structures are already shaping how agencies work together. Members have the opportunity to co-design and implement joint programmes that address shared challenges and scale innovations regionally, such as the 1st Joint Collaborative Programme, led by National Commission for Research and Technology (NCRST) Namibia launched in July 2025. Multi-stakeholder platforms, such as the Network’s regional forums further strengthen cohesion and shared purpose.
Looking ahead, the Network is exploring opportunities to expand its collaborative approach even further. By continuing to develop alliances and platforms that enable knowledge-sharing at both continental and global levels, the IAA Network aims to broaden its reach, amplify impact, and accelerate progress towards Africa’s Digital Future.
Africa’s journey toward the digital future we envision will be determined by our willingness to work together; across sectors, across borders, and across disciplines. The IAA Network exists to make that collaboration possible.
