The meeting brought together senior leaders from national and regional innovation agencies across the continent, along with representatives from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

Those in attendance included Mr. Isaac Chingota of the National Commission for Science and Technology in Malawi, Dr. Erasto Shemu Mlyuka from the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology, Prof. Anicia Peters representing the National Commission on Research, Science and Technology of Namibia, Mr. Carlos Tavares Pina from NOSI in Cabo Verde, Mr. Ato Selamyhun Adefris of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology in Ethiopia, Dr. Tonny Omwansa of the Kenya National Innovation Agency, TIA Acting CEO Mr. Ismail Abdoola, and Mr. Matthew Wallace from IDRC.

The session reviewed the progress made in operationalising the Network’s Secretariat, the rollout of the governance structure, and work package implementation. Delegates received updates from the KeNIA-led Project Management Office and discussed emerging lessons from the first phases of implementation.

A central part of the meeting focused on priority setting for 2026, with members exploring opportunities to expand joint programmes across digital, green, and inclusive innovation, strengthen peer learning, and enhance knowledge sharing. The discussions highlighted the importance of aligned policies and coordinated interventions to build a stronger and more connected continental innovation ecosystem.

Participants reiterated their commitment to supporting Africa’s broader development agendas including STISA 2034, the African Continental Free Trade Area, and Agenda 2063. TIA’s Acting CEO, Mr. Abdoola, welcomed the delegates and emphasised the value of sustained continental cooperation, while IDRC’s Matthew Wallace reaffirmed the funder’s continued support for the Network’s strategic direction.

The meeting closed with agreement on next steps to deepen coordination, strengthen capacity building efforts, and advance the Network’s planned programme of work for 2026.
